Police said he remained in hospital for questionning.
Neither the man or woman have been named.
Neighbours reported a large police presence at the scene on Friday morning, with officers going door-to-door gathering information.
Forensic investigators are also understood to have attended the scene.
No further information has been released by police.
An appeal for witnesses has been issued.
Detectives based in Rochdale are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.05am today, Friday December 27, police were called to reports that a woman had been assaulted at a property on Kirklee Road, Rochdale.
“Officers attended and the woman, who is in her 30s, was taken to hospital with head injuries.
“She remains there in a stable condition.
“A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and false imprisonment.
“He remains in custody for questioning.
